2001 exhibition

introduction
The Museum of Oxford is travelling back to the future with its latest exhibition - 2001: A Space Odyssey. Original artwork from the cult classic film designer Harry Lange and behind the scenes photographs will provide a vivid impression of the painstaking work that went into creating some of the most dazzling images in the history of the cinema. Visitors will be able to see the evolution of many of the designs for 2001, including the concepts for the space plane and station, the Discovery ship and the monolith. In addition, the exhibition will feature artwork from other science fiction films designed by Lange, such as Star Wars, Superman and James Bond’s Moonraker.

Now that 2001 is upon us, Kubrick’s epic space drama still stands as the eipitome of science fiction film making, and as an extraordinary exercise in totally visual cinema. One of the key aims of the exhibition is to explore the many science facts behind the fiction.

why the museum of oxford?
The exhibition is being led by the city’s own museum curator John Lange who happens to be Harry Lange’s son. Both have worked together before on Star Wars, The Muppets and numerous museum exhibition projects. The exhibition celebrates the versitility and vision of this designer’s designs. For Harry Lange, a design must look “true” and he has an uncanny faith in his ability to make audiences believe his creations look like they work. His futuristic visions of mankind at a loss in a brave new world are humanised. Unlike the facile futoristic designs of so much of today’s science fiction, Lange’s works are landscapes of his mind and illustrate the often ussung power of the designer in contemporary blockbuster cinema.

The exhibition is set to tour nationally, but is still available for hire during 2001 and 2002. The official opening of the exhibition will coincide with Science Wekk (16-25 March 2001). This is part of a national campaign being organised by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. The exhibition is being supported by a full science programme of educational events and activities ranging from designing spaceships to the science of archeology.
